Unfortunately, most of us get old, and that goes for our favorite characters, too. Harry Bosch fans are fully aware that he is retired, and we miss him. Michael Connelly, who created Renée Ballard (sort of a rebel like Harry and definitely always in trouble like Harry), an LAPD Detective, in The Late Show, has now paired them together in a new Renée Ballard and Harry Bosch Novel, Dark Sacred Night. Without enough to do on her graveyard shift, Renée finds Harry snooping through files, and when she discovers that he is investigating a years-old murder, she wants in. Daisy Clayton’s murder was never solved, and her mother is staying at Harry’s home temporarily – readers will remember that every victim is important according to Harry Bosch - and he has promised that he would find Daisy’s killer no matter what.

Connelly fans know how well-developed Harry is, and think of him as a real-life acquaintance, and hero. His new character, Renée Ballard is also well-developed, and she is likeable, albeit not well-liked at the department, and definitely is looked upon as an incompetent woman, which she most decidedly is not. She seems to have the knack for looking beyond the obvious, and solving crimes. Connelly’s writing style is succinct and straightforward. His storyline in this fascinating novel is easy-to-follow, and difficult to put down. Neither Harry nor Renée trust each other, but both rely on each other and by the end that distrust is diminished. Both act in a fairly professional manner when investigating the case, and they gain some mutual respect for each other.

This new series gives Bosch fans something to read again, and most Bosch fans will also become Ballard fans. Connelly is one of the most popular thriller authors out there with all of his books becoming bestsellers – that is for a reason – they are fabulous. Highly recommended.
